"Concepts of Space" - a public lecture by Margaret Wertheim about how artists paved the way for physicists at the dawn of the scientific revolution.

In conjunction with the show David Hockney: A Bigger Exhibition, cultural critic Lawrence Weschler is curating 2 days of reflections on Hockney's claims about the use of optical devices such as lenses, mirrors and camera obscures to achieve a naturalistic look in painting. Panelists include physicist James Falco, artists Lauren Bon, Rich Nielsen, Tristan Duke; twin artist/perceptual experimenters Trevor+Ryan Oaks, science writer/curator Margaret Wertheim, and a passel of graphics programmers from Google, Microsoft and ILM.

In conjunction with the "TRASH" exhibition, Margaret will speak about "The Midden" project, in which she and her sister Christine kept 4 years worth of their domestic plastic trash. The resulting installation is a centerpiece of TRASH.

WE ARE ALL CORALS NOW: A meditation on art, science and collectivity in the age of global warming

IFF Director Margaret Wertheim will present the 2013 Templeton Lecture at the University of Sydney. Hosted by the Center for the Human Aspects of Science and Technology (CHAST), the Templeton Lecture was endowed by Professor Charles Birch, the influential Australian biologist who pioneered the subject of environmental philosophy, for which he was the awarded the 1990 Templeton Prize. Margaret’s lecture – We Are All Corals Now” – will discuss the IFF’s Crochet Coral Reef project as a metaphor for thinking about human action in the age of global warming. Venue: Eastern Avenue Auditorium.
